There are many wonderful groups and organisations who operate in the myrtle rust space and have progressed myrtle rust research over the last five years. Below are statements from some of these groups on the work they do to understand, monitor, fight, and raise awareness for this devastating disease.*

Beyond Myrtle Rust

Beyond Myrtle Rust is the largest New Zealand-based programme dedicated solely to research on or related to myrtle rust. Our five research areas cover pathogen dynamics, ecosystem impacts, novel mitigation techniques, kaitiakitanga and Māori led solutions and understanding motivations to monitor. We also work to raise awareness of the threat myrtle rust poses to the ngahere and facilitate information sharing.

Plant & Food Research

Plant & Food Research scientists are working to protect Aotearoa’s precious myrtle species from the devastating effects of myrtle rust. We work collaboratively, respecting the contribution of mātauranga Māori and mana whenua kaitiakitanga, and share learning as part of an international and national community. Our scientists are improving our understanding of the disease in Aotearoa, where and when it occurs and which species are susceptible. Our work is helping preserve a germplasm for future generations and developing tools, including rongoā, to aid the protection of myrtle species.

Better Border Biosecurity

Better Border Biosecurity’s (B3) contribution to the myrtle rust incursion started well before myrtle rust arrived in Aotearoa New Zealand in 2017 with research focused on preparedness, which also provided a firm knowledge base for a growing understanding for ongoing management. Significant contributions from B3 have included preparedness activities, awareness raising, responding to the incursion, and supporting additional investment by connecting Australian and New Zealand interests to develop the original Myrtle Rust Catalyst research programme.

*PLEASE NOTE: that this is far from a comprehensive list! If you do work on myrtle rust and would like to be included in this list, please reach out so we can represent all your excellent mahi.
